Lehman Caves

There is an advantage to not working, we get to spend some great time together. We have been taking advantage of every opportunity we can to do something while we have the time. Today was no exception. We drove out to Lehman Caves and met Grandma and Grandpa Colby there (they are road tripping for a couple weeks). We got up early and left the house at 6:15 a.m., arriving in Baker, Nevada about 9:40 SLC time. We walked around a bit, went to the visitor center and planned on the 10:30 cave tour. This is nothing like Timpanogas Cave. It is better. First the cave is incredible, and secondly, you walk out of the visitor center and like magic there you are at the cave entrance. No horrible hike, no shin splints, just a few steps out the back door and there you are. Quick facts:
The cave was found by Absalom Lehman in 1855, it became a National Monument in 1922. The President can designate a National Monument -think President Clinton for The Grand Staircase :( in 1986 it was designated as a National Park, this is done by a Congressional Vote. Lehman Caves is a beautiful marble cave ornately decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, flowstone, popcorn, and over 300 rare shield formations.


After visiting the cave we drove up the Wheeler Peak road. WOW! 3000 feet in elevation in just 12 miles of winding roads. It would be a great road for a motorcycle ride. While up on top we watched a major storm move across the basin below. When we got back we ate at the little cafe in the gas station/casino/c-store/tavern. Actually not bad food, not great service, but hey we were in Baker, Nevada.
My recommendation: Great day trip! Would be a great weekend break.
